By day, I’m a middle-aged college librarian who’s published some stuff on popular music (like an article on the MC5 for an enyclopedia–a good deed for the kiddies of tomorrow), including what is probably the only current overview of academic books on rock. By night, I’m a college librarian who falls asleep on the couch alot.
I play bass with an obscure, avant-noise, avant-something band called American Folk and try my best to keep it alive, going to shows and checking out new music. And I’m usually reading about music and, now, writing about music.
My mother’s milk was 70s soul followed by punk and No Wave. My1980s had a lot of great underground punk and New Zealand pop. Since the early 1990s, I’ve gotten more into avant-jazz and noise, 60s garage bands (especially the Seeds!) and, yes, bluegrass. Guess I’m an omnivore–certainly not a trashhound.
The Internet has made my music life a lot more interesting. Thank you YouTube and MySpace but I need to get out a heck of a lot more and hear live music. Living in Brooklyn, I have no excuse. Stay tuned …
