Chris Bucholtz has many interests, all of which his wife derides. Before he became “terminally uncool” (wife’s description) he was a columnist for the late, somewhat lamented BAM magazine, covering local music and writing a host of other articles. He was also a writer and reviewer for Pop Culture Press, Amplifier, Nerve, Option and Zum! Before that, he was an on-air “personality” (like a DJ, but more prone to technical mishaps) at San Francisco Bay Area stations KSJS-FM, KZSU-FM and KSUH-FM, where he interviewed dozens of bands, including Sparks, the Fall, the Fleshtones, Mojo Nixon, Game Theory, Red Hot Chili Peppers (when they rocked), Yo La Tengo, Scruffy the Cat, They Might Be Giants, Young Fresh Fellows, Peter Case, Guadalcanal Diary, Crowded House, Flop, Camper Van Beethoven, Firehose, Jonathan Richman, the Fastbacks, Stan Ridgway, Wiretrain, Buffalo Tom, and the Ramones. Chris’ on-air tag line was “the guy with the tie,” a reference to his affinity for neckwear. His use of a visual item to establish a presence in the audio-only world of radio is typical of his haphazard approach to his career.
Sadly, his plan to make millions in the lucrative world of music journalism degenerated into a plan to make hundreds in the lucrative world of music journalism. That caused Chris to branch out into covering technology; he’s currently the editor of Inside CRMÂ and Web Hosting Unleashed, and in the past has been an editor for such thrill-a-minute publications as VARBusiness, HP World, Telephony and Semiconductor Magazine.
Chris’ other passion is aviation, which led him to write a book about the Tuskegee Airmen and another about the Fourth Fighter Group in World War II, both of which were actually published. He enjoys building model airplanes inspired by his interviews and even has a tiny company called Obscureco that sells resin parts for models.
Chris also has a 125,000-item collection of baseball cards and enjoys ice hockey. So you can see where his wife is coming from.
