A song can remind of you of many memories, good and bad. Today I’d like to talk about the school dance.
There are a couple of songs that specifically remind me of the school “dances” that I used to attend. Of course, I use the “dance” lightly, because mostly I would go and stand in the corner and talk to friends. That’s not to say that I didn’t want to dance, I just didn’t know how to ask anybody, so I just went and listened to the music.
Now, I know that I attended dances in both middle school and high school, but the ones I remember the most were the ones from the 8th grade. The school wasn’t very big, in fact the dances were held in the school’s library. They would literally slide the bookcases away and we’d have a place to assemble (we used the area for other activities too). I remember all the awkward 13 year olds dancing, I remember the teachers politely reminding the couples to keep their hands “above the equator”. (Because we wouldn’t any hand-to-butt contact now would we?), and there are two songs, which to this day remind me of that time in my life.
“The Promise” by When In Rome - Its inclusion in Napoleon Dynamite made me relate to the awkwardness of it even more
“Situation” by Yaz – Which was fairly old by the time I was in middle school, something I didn’t know until years later.
Even when I’m 80, I’ll probably still think of the 8th grade dance every time I hear these songs (on microchips inserted into our brains, no doubt). I wonder if today’s students will be as sentimental about Fall Out Boy or Fergie.
What are some of your musical memories?
