At issue is aesthetics. Bands like the Velvets and JD and Big Star had *great* production because they weren't wrapped in the plastic coating of most commercially produced pop music. Aside from whatever brilliance, genius, greatness either band intrinsically has, they live on sonically because they had the good taste to have the right kind of sound in their audio production.
